Surgical Services

Just as the title suggests, General Surgeons receive a diverse and extensive surgical training. As both an adult and paediatric renal and pancreatic transplant surgeon who did his higher degree training in small bowel transplantation, Mr Deardon, has been widely trained in all the major surgical specialities and as such is experienced in most of the areas of surgical practice.

In the UK, general surgical and transplant training involves training in upper and lower gastrointestinal surgical surgery (including gallstone disease, hernia surgery and the management of peri-anal conditions) as well as experience in vascular surgery (particularly varicose veins) and endocrine / thyroid surgery.

The great skill of the general surgeon is the ability to utilize a vast and diverse surgical experience to diagnose and treat patients with a wide variety of surgical problems. Whilst many patients present with a readily identifiable clinical condition such as a hernia, varicose veins or a breast lump, some patients present with more subtle symptoms such as abdominal pain, change in bowel habit, pain in the limbs, weight loss or heartburn.

When a patient presents with non-specific symptoms, it becomes the general surgeon’s job to fully explore the clinical history and arrive at a short list of different diagnoses needing to be investigated in order to arrive at a specific diagnosis which may or may not need surgical treatment. In many cases, careful history taking and appropriate investigations can enable the patient to avoid actual surgery as these days today many abdominal conditions can be treated with medication alone.

An initial consultation with Mr. Deardon includes obtaining a full and complete clinical history and a clinical examination which will point towards a probable diagnosis of the condition. Thereafter a series of investigations may be necessary. These may might include blood tests, ultrasound scans, X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, endoscopy or colonoscopy. Our company policy is to only order necessary investigations which will enable Mr Deardon to establish your diagnosis and arrange your treatment plan.

The company currently offers the following services:

Breast Disease

In the western world, women are now acutely aware of the risks of breast cancer due to worldwide publicity campaigns and more emphasis is being placed on the importance of self examination and regular screening programmes.

Hernia Repair

Hernias are extremely common. A hernia is a bulge or weakness in the muscles which form the front of the body wall. Once the hernia has been fully evaluated, the correct and most suitable repair techniques for your hernia will be discussed with you. You can then ask questions and the surgical options available for your type of hernia will be explained.

Laparascopic Surgery

The term "Laparoscopic Surgery" (or Keyhole Surgery) simply means that an operation can be performed using specially adapted instruments which are placed within the body through small holes, rather than by using a conventional "open" operation. Not all operations can be perfomed this way and the technique is not necessarily always the best option for a given operation.
